Moncton Man Collecting 6000 Pairs Of Socks In Greater Moncton For Homeless

Socks can be an important part of your wardrobe especially if you’re homeless.

Moncton resident Mike Hayes says last year he collected 4000 donations of socks.

This year, he has an even loftier goal, “We have expanded our goal, and are collecting socks all across Atlantic Canada. We have a goal of 20, 000 pairs of socks.”

In Greater Moncton, Hayes is hoping to bring in 6000 pairs.

Hayes is delivering the socks to local shelters as the donations come in.

“When I walked in with the bag of socks, you’d think that I brought in a bag of cash. Many asked what I had, and they were shocked that the socks for them. It was so wonderful to see how grateful they were to receive something as simple as a pair of socks,” Hayes says.

His motivation comes from a group in Ontario called We Be Us, who inspired the collection of socks across the country.

“We all know what it is like to have cold wet feet. A clean pair of socks is so important because if your feet are warm, and your feet are dry, it helps the rest of your body to stay warm as well,” Hayes says.

The deadline for donations is February 19th.

Socks in Moncton can be dropped off at DNA Swag on Alcock Street.
