How would you feel if you threw half-a-million dollars into the garbage?
It almost happened to an Alberta man after a recent business trip to New Brunswick.
D’Arcy Moynaugh bought a lottery ticket in Saint John for the Lotto Max draw on Jan. 7.
“I got back home to Calgary and checked it with the app from there, and it said it wasn’t a winner so I almost threw the ticket out,” said Moynaugh in a news release. “Then my wife said, ‘Wait, it doesn’t work that way!’ and downloaded the Atlantic Lottery app and saw that it was a winner.”
The ticket turned out to be a MAXMILLIONS winner, sharing the $1 million prize with another ticket with the same numbers purchased in Alberta.
Moynaugh, who works in cybersecurity, said the win will put him on track to retire earlier and allow him and his wife to restore a cherished family cabin.
While no plans have been finalized just yet, Moynaugh said he and his wife greatly enjoyed their time visiting Atlantic Canada and are considering retirement in the region.
“It’s just such a friendly place and the people are so nice,” he said. “I hope people here hold on to that and appreciate it because it’s special.”
The winning ticket was sold at Brunswick Square Lotto, which will receive a one per cent seller’s prize.
