Magnetic Hill Zoo, Looking Back On 2019 And Ahead To 2020

It was a sad start to the year at the Magnetic Hill Zoo.

Zoo director Jill Marvin says they had to say goodbye to their beloved gibbon, Molly, who passed away in April.

“But we know that she’s had great care here and she has certainly enriched and inspired many people throughout the years. But quickly after her death we had our first birth of the year, that was a baby marmoset,” she says.

Other new additions include Nemo the camel, who the zoo welcomed in June.

They also had the birth of 3 lemurs, twin Akoli-watusis and two jaguars cubs.

They also received 3 scorpions, George, Georgette and Georgina.

Marvin says the final birth of the year will remain a surprise to visitors until the spring!

She adds, while she can’t reveal any details of what’s to come in 2020, there will be a few surprises for visitors.

“We’ve already picked our “year of” for 2020 and I can give you a hint, we’ll be featuring a region and not just a species,” Marvin says.

Marvin says there will also be a new game that visitors can play to learn about the species and how to help protect them.

2019 was the year of the of the wolf at the Magnetic Hill Zoo.

Marvin says thanks to all the support from visitors, they were able to raise funds to renovate the Arctic wolf exhibit.

“We’re really seeing a difference with the animals, their behavior is better, the visitors can see them better and we hope to inspire people to want to reduce their carbon footprint,” she says.

Marvin says the zoo also had the opportunity to contribute to some canine research project in Canada.
