The Atlantic Wildlife Institute is shocked by another incident involving the death of seagulls in a parking lot.
They’re hoping if anyone has information, they’ll report it to RCMP.
Director of Wildlife Care Pam Novak says a total of six Great Black Back and Herring Gulls were killed in the latest incident in the morning of Boxing Day.
Novak says the Institute received several reports of dead gulls in the CF Champlain parking lot in Dieppe, “We have a lot of different gull species in our region and they’re all protected under the federal migratory bird convention act. So these are protected species. These are chargeable offences.”
Five gulls were found dead in the parking lot, and a sixth was so badly injured, it had be euthanized.
It’s believed that someone struck the gulls with a vehicle.
“These were birds that were probably just sleeping. They weren’t walking around looking for food. For somebody to just drive through them, it probably catches them off guard and they probably can’t get up and fly away quick enough, especially if a car is coming at them with any particular speed,” Novak says.
There was a similar incident in October in the parking lot of the Moncton Coliseum. Novak says in that case, someone witnessed a pick up truck driving into a flock of gulls sitting on the payment…
Thirty-one of the birds were killed.
Novak says, “If someone is going after them, report it to the closest RCMP, so there are records of it and to try and find if there are individuals out there doing this on a regular basis.”
