Executive Director Says New Shelter Receiving Good Response So Far

Around 30 people on average has been staying at Moncton’s new homeless shelter on Albert Street.

The second floor of the shelter opened earlier this month.

House of Nazareth Executive Director Jean Dube says some of them have come over from their other facility, “We have seven women from the Clark Street location, they are all here at the new facility. It is quite frankly, more secure for women here. So we have women I haven’t seen before. They are really appreciating the quality of the infrastructure.”

The clients are only able to stay at the new shelter at night currently, “Because of construction, the Fire Marshall has requested that they leave. At 8am they have to leave, but they come back at around 5pm, after supper,” Dube says.

Dube says his goal is to see the shelter open 24/7 by the end of the year.

“It will be a miracle for Christmas, but I still believe in miracles. We are still having to deal with the kitchen, so I am trying to get everything open by the end of the year. We’re working hard., I met with the Contractors this morning. Everyone if pushing and trying to make this happen.”

Dube says the clients who have been coming in are making themselves at home. They recently decorated a tree at the shelter for Christmas.
