Several People Facing Fines And Jail Time Following Poaching Investigation

A nine-month moose poaching investigation has led to major fines and jail time for several individuals.

Six people were convicted following Operation Meat Bag, a special operation by the Department of Public Safety, that led to arrests in the fall of 2016.

11 search warrants were executed at residences and businesses in the Miramichi and Neguac areas.

As a result of the convictions, 59-year-old Gilles Allain of Neguac faces fines of over 54 thousand dollars for several violations and will spend 156 days in jail.

Five others received jail sentences ranging from 14 to 70 days and fines ranging between 9 and 12 thousand dollars.

A number of items were seized as part of the investigation, including two half-ton trucks, 40 moose racks, 25 rifles and one pistol.
