New Lobster Trap Christmas Tree Tradition For Alma

It’s not your typical Christmas tree, but it represents the community of Alma well.

Mayor Kirstin Shortt told us about it, “A tree that is made entirely out of lobster traps. The topper is a lobster holding a star. The decorations are garland, buoys and lights.”

The idea came after seeing pictures and information from Eastport and Rockland, Maine, “They also have Christmas trees made with lobster traps. Their trees are a bit different, but in Alma, we are unique in what we’ve done,” Shortt says.

The tree lighting will be held on Sunday evening, with festivities beginning at 6:30.

“It is a celebration of the community and a new tradition for Alma. We never even had street lights and we are putting them up this year for the first year,” Shortt says.

She adds this tree is a great representation of the community, because the lobster season is celebrated each year.
