The House of Nazareth has been given the green light to start welcoming individuals last night.
Mayor Dawn Arnold says it’s only partially open but they are welcoming up to 64 men and women.
However she added they must leave during the daytime to allow for construction to continue.
Coucillor Greg Turner says it’s important to note that this is a permanent shelter and a lot of work is going into it.
The new shelter will emulate the Mission Old Brewery in Montreal that aims at transitioning guests into affordable housing.
Turner says once the shelter is fully operational over the coming weeks, it will also eventually offer wrap-around services to help those dealing with things like mental health and addiction.
Mayor Arnold says to expect more details on affordable housing in the near future.
