Parents attended a public information session at Bernice MacNaughton School last night, looking for more answers about a recent case of Tuberculosis.
But some left without getting what they were looking for.
One parent who wished to remain anonymous says there needs to be more awareness surrounding this diagnosed case.
“I felt that they didn’t give us enough answers or enough information about how they plan on managing it. We had questions about who was in contact with the patient,” the woman told us.
During the session, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Yves Leger did not reveal the identity of the person diagnosed.
He stated that they have to respect the patients right to confidentiality.
Parents also felt testing needs to be done now, not in January as planned.
“I am having my son tested right now, just to make sure and then I will test him again in eight weeks. Other than that, we’re not really sure what we should do,” the mom said.
Notices went home to parents last week, stating that there was a case of the infection in the school community.
Tuberculosis is an infection of the lungs, similar to pneumonia. It can be spread from one person to another when an individual is sick and coughing, but it cannot be spread by handshakes, or touching tables or doorknobs.
The mom added, “My child in particular is actually quite upset. He is outraged that the school isn’t taking this a little more seriously.”
