Learning The Sport Of Canicross

A member of the Moncton Dog Runners club recently returned home from Quebec as a winner in the Canadian National Championships for harness dog sports.

Sarah Peel was named the Canadian Female Champion in Canicross, which is described as cross country running with a dog, “The best dog to run Canicross with or to do any sports with is the dog that you have. The biggest thing for the team, is that bond and so the more you work on it, the better you’ll get as a team. The actual breed of dog, isn’t all that significant.”

The dog that she runs with is a greyster, which is a combination between a greyhound and a German short hair pointer, “Pretty much any dog works, but at the higher levels, we see a lot of Pointer breed dogs,” Peel says.

She trains others in the sport of Canicross, but she says it is not as easy as just strapping yourself to the dog, “You learn the commands and how to interact with your dog, so you can see things coming and how to make sure that they are confident.”

A Canicross event held at Mapleton Park over the weekend raised over $700 for Fulfilling Hearts Dog Rescue.
