NB Power To Help Divert Birds From Flying Into Power Lines

NB Power is hoping that the installation of 16 hundred bird diverters will help reduce the amount of collisions with power lines.

Marc Belliveau, spokesperson for NB Power says the company will be carrying out important maintenance work on 25 kilometres of transmission lines Memramcook to Sackville.

This will include the installation of 1,600 bird diverters to minimize bird strikes with power lines.

“Any man-made structure of course, is an issue. The thing with transmission lines, and the reason we’re putting the bird diverters on them is that they’re often hard for birds to see. The bird diverters we’re putting into place are sort of like a corkscrew-type shape and they’ll make the line far, far more visible

He says they chose to focus on the Tantramar marsh area due to the heavy population of birds in that ecosystem.

NB Power says they will be carrying out the work in the least invasive way possible and should be done by Dec. 15th.
