Moncton Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak Declared Over

New Brunswick Public Health has declared the legionnaires’ disease outbreak over in the Moncton area.

The source was traced to the cooling tower of an air conditioning system in a West End building.

Regional medical officer of health Dr. Yves Leger says there were a total of 16 confirmed cases and individuals ranged in age from the mid-30’s to the mid-90’s with an average age of 60.

“Almost all were hospitalized and a few did require intensive care unit support. I think that’s a very strong testament to the severe nature of that infection. Fortunately though, no individuals died from this infection.”

Dr. Leger says Public Health will not be naming the location noting how it’s not in the public interest and he doesn’t want to create anxiety in the community.
