Tens Of Thousands Across NB Still Without Power

In New Brunswick, there are more than 50, 000 N-B Power customers without electricity, down from nearly 80, 000 at one point Saturday evening.

The majority of those are in the Greater Moncton and surrounding areas, as well as areas surrounding Shediac Cap Pele.

NB Power Spokesperson Marc Belliveau doesn’t expect lengthy outages for most residents, “Unless we run into some damages that are very, very difficult to repair in one day. Occasionally what will happen, and this is when things get very complicated, is when there is a major damage to transmission poles in a remote area. But it is difficult to say right now, until it is assessed.”

Belliveau says in Moncton, 10, 000 of those without power at this hour are all on one transmission line, so crews will be working on that this morning.

He says it was a very active day yesterday, with trees making contact with wires.

“A lot of the ground is saturated and wet and the roots of the trees were failing, because of the rain. That is main issue with many of the outages so far,” Belliveau says.

Fifty-two contractors and 20 vegetation crews will be working today, assessing damages and cutting trees.

Estimated restoration times will be posted up on websites as the morning progresses, and Belliveau encourages customers to check for those updated times throughout the day.
