City of Moncton To Purchase Road Salt From Penobsquis

The City of Moncton will be sourcing its road salt from a mine in Penobsquis, near Sussex.

Last year, the City was got its salt from Pugwash, Nova Scotia and city councillors had numerous complaints.

Councillor Greg Turner says it is cheaper out of Sussex than it was from Pugwash.

He adds that transportation costs will also be lower since Sussex is much closer than Pugwash.

Turner says between the cost of the product and transportation, they will save a combined total of about 162 thousand dollars.

“Overall, for the municipalities of New Brunswick, it’s a great saving and we know it’s a quality product because we used to use that product and that’s the product that we had the most success with until we were forced to go out of province,” says Turner.

Turner says they are also supporting local worker as the opening of the Sussex mine created about 50 jobs.

These cost savings will be factored in and included in the upcoming budgets.
