Federal Government Invests In New Hospice Residential Facility

More good news for the Celebration Capital campaign for Hospice Southeast New Brunswick.

The federal government is investing a million dollars for the construction of a residential facility to be located in Moncton.

This comes just months after a million dollar commitment from the provincial government, conditional on funds from the feds as well.

Executive Director for Hospice Greater Moncton Tradina Meadows-Forgeron says they knew the two governments would come through.

“Everyone is very invested in this. It has been a very long time for Southeast New Brunswick to have a Hospice in this area that I knew they would come through for us. We were positive,” Meadows-Forgeron says.

In June, Hospice Southeast New Brunswick launched a five million dollar fundraising campaign for the 10 bed facility that will be built on Pleasant Street.

Meadows-Forgeron says this is very important, because currently palliative care patients are in hospital, getting end of life care, “But at a Hospice residence they are going to have their own room and the families will be able to go through the end of life journey with them. They will be together, in private, with their family.”

She says news of this new facility is encouraging for current and future palliative care patients, “Knowing that we are building this residence for either themselves or their loved ones. We often say when people need us the most, when your loved one needs us the most, they will be there for you.”

The federal government’s contribution to the project will be distributed through the Canada-New Brunswick Home and Community Care and Mental Health and Addictions Services Funding Agreement 2017-2022.

MP for Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe Ginette Petitpas-Taylor says, “With our rapidly aging population, the need for better ways to help patients and their families face end-of-life illnesses will only continue to grow. This will help ensure that for years to come we will be able to properly care for individuals needing these important services.”

The new facility will include 10 private client rooms, and four private family rooms, along with a kitchen, medical areas for medical staff, as well as indoor and outdoor public areas, sunroom, lobby and a park.

It is expected to open in the fall of 2020.
