Tent City Impacting Local Residents And Businesses

Homelessness has been a growing concern for the city of Moncton in recent years.

Tent cities have been popping up all over Greater Moncton, notably the one located on Albert street.

City councilor Blair Lawrence says it’s having an impact on the community and local businesses.

“We are hearing from local business, especially in that area– I haven’t seen the actual budget print-outs, but I believe them–they are losing money and they are losing clients,” says Lawrence.

The city of Moncton made the conscious decision to support the Albert street tent city by offering services like on site bathrooms and security.

Lawrence says the city is struggling to find balance between advocating for those living in tents and businesses in the area.

Although crime isn’t necessarily a direct result of homelessness, Lawrence says some residents don’t feel as safe.

“There is organized crime and whatnot, but it’s also a responsibility to citizens to make sure they don’t provide the opportunity for criminals to thieve,” he says.

Despite having private security on site, Lawrence has suggested a closer collaboration with the RCMP.

The tent city was supposed to be dismantled following the opening of a new shelter, but the project has been delayed.
