Scow To Make Special Deliveries Via Petitcodiac River

It’s not often you see a Scow travelling up the Petitcodiac River.

This evening, in honour of the World Acadian Congress, a special trip will be made.

Employees from the Belliveau Orchard will board the boat in Memramcook, and will make their way to the Moncton Press Club.

Project Manager Guy Gautreau explained what a Scow is, “It is essentially a flat bottomed boat. There were a lot of Scows in our area in the late 19th century and early 20th century. They were used for shipping all sorts of goods along the Upper Bay of Fundy. A lot of them were built in our area and a lot of the Captains were from just around our Orchard.”

Gautreau says they have bought a modern version and made a few alterations to give it an aged look.

They’ll be delivering some SCOW cider and some of the first apples of the season, “We’ll be meeting with a few of our downtown clients, and anyone who may be there in the area, especially for Le Congrès Mondial Acadien or anyone who might be on the Trans Canada Trail for a walk,” Gautreau says.

He says the idea of floating a scow up the Petitcodiac was from the Manager of Belliveau Orchards, “Robert likes history. He felt that the memory of scows, the heritage was starting to fade,” Gautreau says.

The scow also inspired the name of the Belliveau Orchards SCOW cider.

Gautreau says they have to wait for the tidal bore first, and then wait for the water to calm before launching the scow from one of their orchard blocks in Memramcook.

The scow is expected to come around the river bend in Dieppe by around 5:30pm and come ashore behind the Moncton Press Club between 6pm and 6:30pm..
