Two City Councillors will hold a public meeting this month, to discuss changes made to Mountain Road.
A year ago, lanes were reduced in a section approaching Magnetic Hill, and bicycle lanes were also added.
City Councillor Bryan Butler says he still hears concerns, “I get a lot of complaints about people not really understanding. Sometimes there isn’t enough room for motorists to turn in, and you have to stay in the other lane and it blocks traffic. That is especially on the lane coming up off of the Trans Canada near the the McDonalds. Cars have actually backed up onto the highway.”
Butler says he also feels the cyclists are at risk, “Up here, we have a white line and on the other side of the white line is a cycling lane. To me, it is a false security for the cyclist. I would like to take one sidewalk on one side for pedestrians, and on the other side, take up the concrete and put in asphalt for a cycling lane. It would make sure the cyclists are off of Mountain Road, and on their own path. That would allow me, as a grandfather, with my two grandsons to go to Magic Mountain on bicycles. Then we can let the vehicles go back to four lanes so everyone can turn when they want to. You can’t bottleneck like they did up there.”
Butler and Brian Hicks, who are the Councillors for Ward 3, called the meeting on August 14th.
It will be held at the Lutz Mountain Meeting House, from 6pm until 8pm.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
The issue is expected to be discussed at Moncton City Council again in September.
