Solider On To Benefit Injured Members Of the Canadian Armed Forces

If you live near the Royal Oaks golf course, you may notice some activity overhead at around noon today.

The 4th annual golf tournament to raise awareness and funds for Soldier On will be held.

Spokesperson Jake Bell says several aircraft will be making an appearance, “A couple of military helicopters, one of the new Cyclones that was purchased to replace the Sea King and you’ll see a CH146 Griffon that comes out of Gagetown, they will be flying over the golf course. The 146 will land and be there for the afternoon.”

Bell says military vehicles will also be parked there. An artillery gun will also be fired at around 1 o’clock this afternoon for the shotgun start.

Soldier On has been around since 2006. Bell says it is a program of the Canadian Armed Forces Transition Group, that supports veterans and serving members who have been injured.

The event is organized by a department under the Canadian Forces Morale and welfare system. The aim is to get ill and injured soldiers back into an active lifestyle through physical activity.

“When I retired from the military, I was looking for something to do to give back. I was speaking to a friend of mine who lost both legs when he served in Afghanistan., He told me Soldier On was the organization that allowed him to get away from the everyday things he was dealing with and to be with a group of people who were going through things similar to him. It allowed him in his rehabilitation to get his mind straight and allowed him to overcome some of these difficulties and lead as normal of a life as he possibly could.”
