Clean-up At Johnson’s Mills Before Sandpipers Arrive

The migration of thousands of semipalmated sandpipers will be celebrated at Johnson’s Mills over the next few weeks. First, the shoreline needs to be cleaned up.

Project Coordinator with Nature New Brunswick Adam Cheeseman says volunteers will be gathering at the beach on Sunday, July 14th from 1pm to 3pm.

“Going to the beach to pick up any marine debris. We are expecting a lot of marine debris that is brought in by the tides. It is really important to pick it up along with the plastic waste, and other types of waste that can interfere with the birds as they are trying to feed or trying to roost. So we’re just trying to just cleaning up the habitat.”

At peak, more than 150,000 of semipalmated sandpipers rest and feed at Johnson’s Mills during their migration from the Arctic to South America.

Volunteers are welcome to help with the clean-up.

The annual Dorchester Sandpiper Festival will be held July 27, 28 and 29th.
