Fisheries and Oceans Canada has been made aware of an entangled North Atlantic Right Whale in Gulf of St. Lawrence.
The state of the whale and the length of time it has been entangled is still unknown.
Additionally, the carcass of the another North Atlantic right whale known as Clipper is undergoing a necropsy today.
The whale’s body was initially spotted by a DFO surveillance aircraft on Thursday, approximately 100 km off the Gaspé Peninsula.
Veterinary teams from the Université de Montréal and the Atlantic Veterinary College, supported by American experts, will carry out a necropsy to try to identify the cause of death.
This is the fourth necropsy performed this year. The preliminary findings of the veterinarians in charge of the second and third necropsies “are highly compatible with death due to blunt trauma, consistent with vessel strike.”
