Kilts and plaid will be the preferred attire at the 13th annual Moncton Highland Games.
Many New Brunswickers have Scottish family ties according to the event’s athletic director, Bryan Maclean.
“I think it’s in around 66-67 per cent of New Brunswickers that are tied to Celtic heritage.”
The daylong event includes highland dance, pipes & drums and heavy events competitions as well as demonstrations, workshops, live entertainment and cultural exhibitions.
The entertainment tent is open to all ages and features live Celtic music.
This year, the event is hosting the Canadian-Scottish Athletic Federation Light-Weight National Championship. It will welcome competitors from all over.
“There will be 8 competitors across the country competing for the national championship and it’s actually the inaugural season for the lightweight championship. So it’s a new division in Canada but it’s a division that’s been competed internationally for the last 7 or 8 years,” Maclean says.
Other activities include axe throwing, sheer hearding dogs and falconry!
You can also purchase food from onsite vendors with many tasty Canadian or Scottish options.
Over 3 thousand attendees are expected to attend this year’s games.
Gates open at 8:30 on Saturday morning at the Hal Betts Sportsplex on the corner of Assumption Blvd and Vaughn Harvey Blvd.
