A group of concerned residents who were worried about the addition of another surface parking lot in downtown Moncton are celebrating a victory.
Moncton City Council turned down a proposal this week to create 365 parking spaces at the old Co-Op location on Record Street.
Alex Arseneau was among about 20 residents who was at city hall for the council vote.
Arseneau was worried that more vehicles would mean more carbon emissions.
Resident Lise Ethier says more carbon is part of the problem not the solution.
“This is an exceptional situation and it needs an exceptional form of action,” she notes.
Ethier adds she was especially pleased with council’s decision given that the city recently declared a climate emergency along with numerous other cities across Canada and around the world.
