Residents Reminded To Register Flood Damages As Waters Recede

New Brunswick EMO is reminded residents whose homes were affected by flooding to register their damages with the province.

The province has also launched its disaster financial assistance program for residents, small business owners and municipalities.

Health and safety inspection teams were out assessing homes and businesses in Fredericton, Maugerville, Grand Bay-Westfield, Hampton, Rothesay and Quispamsis this weekend.

The teams consist of staff from the Office of the Fire Marshal, health inspectors, environment inspectors as well as electrical and structural professionals.

These inspections determine whether homes or businesses are safe enough for residents or owners to stay in or to return to their homes.

The province also says health and safety inspections must be conducted in order to have power reconnected and be considered for Disaster Financial Assistance advance payments, which were increased to $15,000 this year.

The province will also be providing free bacterial testing for well water.

Water sampling kits can be picked up at designated Service New Brunswick centres in Fredericton, Burton, Chipman, Sussex, Hampton and Saint John, at the Research and Productivity Council or through Health and Safety teams beginning May 7.

Water levels in the Saint John river are still dropping steadily.

Fredericton and Maugerville are the first to see levels drop below flood stage, with both areas looking back to normal. Levels will stabilize during the week before dropping even more on Friday.

The Saint John area is also just below flood stage as of Sunday morning.

Jemseg will remain above flood stage the longest, with levels staying high throughout the week.

Grand Lake is forecast to dip below flood stage later today, and Sheffield by Thursday, with levels slowly receding throughout the week.
