A group called Friends of Centennial Park will hold a meeting tonight, with concerns about a number of trees that are slotted to be cut down.
Erik Gingles says he became concerned when he noticed pink ribbons tied around the trees, which is an indication that they were to come down.
“The purpose of tonight’s meeting is to see who is interested or concerned about the state of the park and the trees that are going to be removed north of Centennial Park,” Gingles says.
The trees are on private property, after the land was rezoned. A new Oulton College building is part of a development that will be built on the north side of Firebreak Road. That is right next to Centennial Park.
Hundreds of trees were cut down last year, to make way for a new Centennial Beach.
“The park is getting smaller and smaller and we are losing more of the precious greenspace. We are trying to create a collective group who have the same concerns. As concerned citizens, we need to be able to make sure that risk is mitigated as much as possible. Should there be further development in the city, at least there will be a group of people who are there to say , let’s talk about this first,” Gingles says.
The meeting will be held at the Rotary Park Lodge at 7 o’clock on May 1st.
