Proposed Ban On Single-Use Plastic Bags

Moncton city council has been asked to place a ban on single use plastic bags.

Grade 11 student at Bernice MacNaughton high school Sarah Gingles gathered over two thousand signatures on an online petition for the ban.

She has asked nearly 20 businesses in the city to make the change but is now asking city council for their help.

She suggested a 75 cent plastic tax– or plas-tax– on single use bags and hopes the extra cost will discourage people from using them.

The money raised from plastic bags could be put towards environmental causes.

Additionally, she has asked for a five to 10 cent credit system for customers who use reusable bags.

Gingles says the plas-tax tactic that reduced consumption by 90 per cent in Ireland.

She hopes Moncton will follow cities like Montreal and Victoria with this ban.
