New Affordable Housing Plan Proposed For The City

Affordable housing was on the agenda at last night’s Moncton city council meeting.

Although the city has already invested 150 thousand dollars towards the issue in the past year, council says it’s not enough.

Councillor Paul Pellerin said all three levels of government have not taken the proper measures and that the recent carbon tax changes will be taking away from funds to help fight homelessness.

The lack of affordable housing has been an ongoing issue in the city but the ten year plan presented offers citizens some hope.

Through consultations with the community, Johanna Hashim of HSH Consulting presented the comprehensive plan towards solving the issue.

She says one of the first steps in solving the issue is identifying each person, individually.

Mayor Dawn Arnold says the community is passionate about the issue and will continue to search for innovative ways to create a variety of affordable housing options.

However, as councillor Bryan Hicks mentioned during the meeting, although this plan looks good on paper, it means nothing until we put it into action.

Homelessness has been an ongoing issue and with the recent closure of the Out of the Cold shelter many are in need of a place to stay.
