Looking for a new and daring way to ring in the new year? How about a dip in Palmers Pond in Dorchester?
This is the 26th year for the Polar Dip in Dorchester.
Spokesperson Dan Matthews says it’s a bone chilling experience, but to some, it’s a great way for a fresh start in the new year, “It’s one of the very few Polar Dips that you actually jump from the ice into the water. The pond where we hold the dip is about four feet deep, and it has a very muddy bottom, so we recommend the dippers wear something on their feet.”
Dippers range in age from young to old and the number of people they have each year, depends on temperatures.
This year, they’ll have one man doing his 25th dip into Palmers Pond, “Andy Patridge is a founding member of the Club. He came as a leader of the band last year with a big sign. He likes to keep us in suspense as to what he has planned each year. he will jump in the water at 1pm sharp.”

“Registration at the site is from 12:30 to 1pm. The event goes very fast, because the spectators and those doing the dip don’t like to stand around too long in the cold,” Matthews says.
