Dialogue Encouraged To Protect Urban Forests

Trees are often cut down to make way for development but the national non-profit charity Tree Canada is trying to bring about change.

Spokesperson Marie Paul Godin says if a developer removes one tree, they should have to plant at least two or more as replacements.

“We encourage dialogue between the municipalities and developers to occur about avoiding the removal of trees instead. Because it is important to keep the trees that are currrently there even though there is development happening,” she says.

Godin notes how Moncton manages about 15,000 acres of forest within its city limits.

She adds the city does have multiple staff members managing the forest to ensure residents receive the most benefits from the trees.
