Election Campaign: Day 24

On the campaign trail on Saturday, the Progressive Conservatives promised to introduce a tax credit for children’s sports, arts and culture programs so families can claim eligible fees paid to register their kids in these types of activities.

Leader Blaine Higgs said his government would allow families to claim up to $500 in expenses per child for a program involving physical activity, and up to $250 per child for programs involving arts, culture and recreational activities.

The Conservatives said they would also eliminate the controversial school nutrition policy known as Policy 711.

Liberal leader Brian Gallant said he would modernize the province’s liquor laws and allow retail outlets like convenience stores to sell beer, wine and alcohol if re-elected next month.

Gallant said the changes would also let patrons bring their own bottles of wine to more restaurants and allow them to buy products to go.

The People’s Alliance of New Brunswick promised to end herbicide spraying on Crown land and use more environmentally friendly methods like thinning.
