New Sexual Harassment Guideline Unveiled

The New Brunswick Human Rights Commission has released an updated sexual harassment guideline as part of Respectful Workplace Week.

It is intended to help people understand their rights and responsibilities under the province’s Human Rights Act.

Commission chair Nathalie Chiasson says they process a high volume of inquiries each year, but they know many incidents of sexual violence — particularly sexual harassment — are still underreported.

Chiasson adds there is no place in schools, businesses or public institutions for attitudes and behaviours which lead to harassment and discrimination.

The guideline includes examples and explanations of what constitutes sexual harassment, quid pro quo, poisoned work environment, signs of unwelcomeness and intersectional sexual harassment.

Chiasson says it is an effective tool to educate employers, employees and others about the Human Rights Act and its applications.
