Moncton Helps Raise Awareness About Prostate Cancer

The City of Moncton is showing its support for Prostate Awareness Month.

A flag raising was held yesterday at City Hall and blue lights are now illuminating Downing Street at night.

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month.

Interim Executive Director for the Atlantic region Dennis Potharst says it is very important that all men have a discussion with their doctor about the disease,”We typically say that, when you get to the age of around 40, to really speak to your doctor about symptoms and about perhaps establishing a baseline.”

Potharst says death rates have dropped across Canada over the past 20 years, “They have dropped up to around 40 per cent. But, Canada wide, around 4100 men will still die of prostate cancer each year. That is serious enough for us to say that we need to pay attention.”

He says it’s important that tests are done, before it’s too late, “The survival rate is close to 100 per cent when detected early, so that’s really key, to be proactive with you health and to have that conversation with your doctor. Just talk about the disease so your are armed with more of that knowledge.”
