Motorists Advised To “Watch Your Speed” As School Year Begins

A reminder to motorists as the kids head back to school, Watch your speed.

Dieppe’s Fire department recently launched an awareness campaign to remind drivers to respect the speed limits on all city roads in Greater Moncton…

Chief Conrad Landry says it is especially important for school zones, “In most school zones, the speed limit is 30 km/h, but the kids are excited and may not be paying attention, and they may not see you. Many younger kids are also not used to crossing streets, so it is a community and we all have to play our part. In a car versus pedestrian accident, we all know who is going to win that battle. So slow down, and be alert.”

Landry adds that last year, firefighters responded to 145 accidents on Dieppe’s road, and in many incidents, speed assessments found that some motorists were travelling twice as fast as the 50 kilometres an hour speed limit.

He adds that so far this year, they have already responded to 100 accidents.

Landry adds, “Even if there is not school, you still need to pay attention in the evenings, and afterschool, because the kids could be taking part in activities.”

Motorists are also reminded to stop for school buses, Those caught passing a school bus while the lights are flashing, could face large fines.
