Education Minister Speaks Out On Sugary Foods Ban

Concerns about the Liberal government’s ban on selling chocolate milk and other sugary items in schools have prompted the education minister to speak out.

Some parent groups have expressed concern the changes, announced in June, will jeopardize their school fundraising events.

Brian Kenny said he is “deeply troubled” by those reports and believes the spirit of the policy will still allow for extra-curricular, fundraising and holiday events that include treats.

“Our goal was to eliminate things like slushies and juices and drinks with added sugar that were being allowed to be served under the previous policy, from being served on a daily basis to our students,” Kenny said in a statement on Friday.

“We fully support the successful and proactive events organized by teachers, parents and students to raise funds and boost school spirit that have gone on for years and should continue for years.”

Government cannot direct officials to make changes because of the election, but Kenny says they have encouraged them to clarify the policy and ensure it is applied in a “rational, common sense way”.
