It took around two hours to get a fire under control at the Trites Sugar Camp on Gorge Road under control early this morning…
Moncton Fire Platoon Chief Brian Gaudet says they arrived on scene at around 3:30.
“We arrived and found a lot of fire coming from the exterior of the building, and the fire then travelled to a loft area. We were able to contain the fire predominantly to one end and after that it was a matter of trying to haul the ceilings down to get access to the area where the fire was trapped,” Gaudet says.
He says it was a challenging one to fight, due to the construction of the building, which made it difficult to get to the fire..
“We had good results though, especially based on what we found when we arrived on scene. The guys worked very hard for about two hours straight. It is very humid this morning and we had to take a lot of breaks with a lot of water. We have to shorten the work cycles and extend the rest cycles when it is very humid. This means there have to be more resources on the Personnel side to maintain that,” Gaudet says.
Around 15 firefighters helped to battle the blaze.
“The building is still standing and has a reasonably solid roof and is definitely repairable,” Gaudet adds.
The fire was called in by homeowners who live nearby.
There’s no word on a cause at this point, and the fire investigator is currently on scene.
