Matthew Vincent Raymond Appears In Court

A man charged with killing two police officers and two civilians in Fredericton has appeared in provincial court.

Matthew Vincent Raymond appearing in front of Judge Julian Dickson on Monday morning.

He was brought into court wearing an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs, and kept his head down during the proceedings.

The 48-year-old is charged with four counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Const. Sara Burns, Const. Robb Costello, Donnie Robichaud and Bobbie Lee Wright on August 10.

Police have said Robichaud and Wright were shot outside an apartment building on Brookside Drive, and the two officers were hit by bullets when they responded to the call.

Investigators say the suspect, later identified as Raymond, was taken to hospital with serious injuries after exchanging gunfire with officers.

Defence lawyer Nathan Gorham requested a publication ban on any pre-trial hearings and Judge Dickson granted the request.

Gorham also requested an adjournment and the matter was set over until September 24 at 9:30 a.m. for a plea hearing.
