CF Champlain Owners Under Investigation For Use Of Facial Recognition Technology

The company that owns Champlain Mall is under investigation by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada for its use of facial recognition technology.

The investigation was initiated last week in the wake of questions and concerns about whether Cadillac Fairview is collecting and using personal information without consent.

The company has stated they are using the technology to monitor traffic, as well as the age and gender of shoppers.

The company claims they are not capturing the images of individuals.

The issue first came to light in Calgary, Alberta, with the provincial Information and Privacy Commissioner there opening a simultaneous investigation.

Cadillac Fairview confirmed they are cooperating with authorities, and have suspended use of cameras pending a resolution of the investigation.
