Trade is top of mind for Canada’s 13 premiers who are meeting in St. Andrews this week.
New Brunswick premier Brian Gallant, who chairs the Council of the Federation, says Canada has to shift its approach in its trade relationship with the U.S.
Gallant says instead of speaking to more traditional media, the premiers need to seek out right-wing media outlets in the U.S.
“We want to now push a Fox News approach. The idea there is that instead of going to speak to the New York Times, we need to start to go on news outlets that maybe don’t agree that trade with Canada is important,” he notes.
Gallant says it will be important to target grassroots Americans who may have ill feelings toward free trade or trade with Canada.
Gallant adds the premiers are seeking a first ministers meeting with the prime minister before the end of the year to discuss trade with the U.S., diversifying our markets along with internal trade.
