Former Premier Ray Frenette Has Died

Former New Brunswick premier Ray Frenette has died, according to a news release from the province.

Frenette served as a Liberal MLA for the riding of Moncton East for 25 years.

He was also the province’s 28th premier from 1997 to 1998 — after Frank McKenna stepped down and before Camille Theriault took the post.

Premier Brian Gallant says in a statement that Frenette has been called a “giant of New Brunswick politics, and for good reason.”

“On a personal level he served as a mentor and advisor to me when I was first considering getting into public service,” says Gallant.

“He had so much knowledge and his advice was invaluable. He was generous with his advice and so wise.”

Gallant says Frenette understood New Brunswickers and what it meant to represent people in the legislature.
