“We must embrace immigration,” that from the Former Chair for the Three Plus Corporation.
Jim Lockyer was on hand yesterday, during the unveiling of the Atlantic Immigration Summit. It is a two day event that incorporates the arts, to help raise awareness of the challenges immigrants face..
He says this summit, that will be held in Moncton in May, is designed to deal with a number of issues, “Immigration, right through to integration and how we as a community do it. Not only a civil community, but business community, private sector, government and finally the community itself, the community fabric.”
This summit is the first of four to be held in Atlantic Canada.
Lockyer says many companies are showing an interest in our city, with the hopes of bringing hundreds of additional jobs.
“We’ve had a recent announcement of 500 jobs from a major national financial institution. If we don’t fill those 500, we’re going to lose them. They’re going to go to Toronto, or Montreal, and that is 500 missed opportunities. There are jobs galore in Moncton right now, and no one to take them. If we don’t embrace this moment, we’re not going to be able to fund hospitals or highways, and everyone is going to have to suffer the consequences of that.”
The summit takes a unique approach to raising awareness. It includes a performance called “Alien” developed by the Atlantic Ballet.
