NB Power Explains Lengthy Power Outage

Many power customers in Riverview and parts of Moncton are wondering why it took so long to repair an outage on Saturday.

NB Power says the equipment failure was in a remote area which meant added time for crews to get there and to bring in specialized equipment such as an excavator and crane.

The utility is apologizing for posting incorrect information on its website noting how it originally stated that power would be restored by late morning when in fact the last customers weren’t back on the grid until Saturday night.

When power was being restored, some customers may have experienced a “cold load pickup” which means the grid was being overloaded and power was lost again.

Almost 13,000 customers were without electricity at the peak of the outage, about half that number were restored by midday and the rest by about 9pm.

In a post on its blog, NB Power states, “power restoration is not a simple task but we can assure you our crews were working as fast as possible to rectify the situation and we absolutely understand this was not an easy situation for customers, especially in winter months. We thank you for your patience.”
