Youth Wanted For Local Navy League Cadets Program

A local non-profit organization that teaches children between the ages of 9 and 12, is hoping to increase its numbers.

There are currently 3500 Navy League Cadets across the country in 102 different communities. Greater Moncton is one of five communities in New Brunswick that offers the program.

Midshipman Andrew Mawhinney says it’s a free program that helps youth life skills and building friendships, “Everything from knot tying up to citizenship, first aid, sailing, and marksmanship. We also do camps, and the plan this year is to do three of them.”

Mawhinney says their motto is to “Have fun, build skills and make friends.” He says the program also teaches responsibility, discipline and respect.

This is a Corp that is not funded by the Department of National Defence, but through local initiatives, and donations. Uniforms are provided.

Currently, the group in Greater Moncton has 15 members, that’s down from last year. Mawhinney would like to see that number double.

The group meets on Tuesday nights at Birchmount School, from 6:15pm until 8:15pm.

It runs September to June, but you can join at anytime.
