American Man Sentenced In Fatal Mountie Crash

A 31-year-old American man has been sentenced in connection with the death of Nova Scotia-based RCMP Constable Francis Deschenes.

Vasiliy Meshko of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania pleaded guilty last week to driving without due care and attention under the Motor Vehicle Act.

In Moncton court today, he was fined $3,000, received two years probation and is banned from driving in New Brunswick for two years.

On September 12th, 35-year-old Constable Deschenes stopped his cruiser alongside the Trans-Canada Highway near Memramcook to help a driver change a flat tire when he was struck and killed by a utility van.

RCMP conducted a thorough investigation but found there was not enough evidence to proceed with criminal charges.
