Police officers who investigate crimes of sexual violence should be trained in how to deal with victims of trauma. That word from Beth Lyons, Executive-Director of the New Brunswick Women’s Council in light of a critical report on how police have investigated sexual assault complaints.
Lyons says trauma can sometimes affect a person’s memory and how they present. She adds the report is proof positive that deeply rooted systemic issues have to be addressed going forward.
The Women’s Council says it’s pleased with the provincial government’s public commitment for improvement but wants to see a timeline for implementation and framework in place for accountability.
