Moncton firefighters, and Codiac RCMP members are engaging in a friendly competition today to donate blood in the 20th anniversary of the Guns and Hoses Challenge.
Codiac RCMP Corporal Lynn Saulnier says they tend to see an increase in accidents or incidents with the injured requiring a lot of blood.
“Sometimes you can get those large donations and it may only be able to help one or two people depending on the circumstances of what takes place, and how much blood is actually required,” says Saulnier.
She says it’s a friendly challenge between themselves, and the Moncton Fire Department, which they’re hosting at the clinic at 500 Mapleton Road from 9 to 5.
“It’s more or less us as first responders rolling up our sleeves and seeing how many people we can get out from our particular units to donate and kinda that friendly banter back and forth to try and see who has the higher number,” says Saulnier.
She adds they are aiming to bring in 96 units of blood in the challenge, saying it’s critical to raise as much as possible since a badly injured car crash victim could require as many as 50 units of blood to try to help save their life.
