Santa Claus To Officially Arrive In Greater Moncton

It may not feel like Christmas, based on the temperatures, but Ole Saint Nick is going to come anyway.

Over 100, 000 spectators will gather in the downtown on Saturday night for the 51st Royale Greater Moncton Santa Claus parade.

President Robert Gallant says they`ll be celebrating a special theme this year, “This year, thanks to our friends of Canada 150, they’ve given us some extra funds. We’re going to be looking at Christmas: Then and Now, so we’re really looking forward to the floats that will come out and celebrating the history of Christmas in Canada.”

It begins at 5pm, and it takes around two and a half hours to get to the end in Dieppe. “We start at the corner of Cameron and Main Streets, and go all the way to Paul Street and Champlain Place,” Gallant adds.

There will be around 100 floats for this year’s parade.

Gallant says it’s important that you bring along a non perishable food item item or a cash donation, “Tim Horton’s will be back partnering with us again this year. They will be collecting donations for the Food Depot Alimentaire. It’s one of the biggest food drives in the city.”

A large group of volunteers is needed for this event including non profits, corporations and high school groups, and there are a lot of volunteer man hours that go into the parade to make it a success.

There will also be an Open House at Moncton City Hall starting at 5 o’clock.

List of street closures

– From 1 p.m. until approximately 7 p.m., closure of Vaughan Harvey Boulevard, from the intersection of Millennium Boulevard and John Street, to the entrance of the Sobeys on Vaughan Harvey Boulevard, leaving the intersections of Vaughan Harvey Boulevard open to traffic.

– From 3 p.m. until approximately 7 p.m., closure of the Vaughan Harvey Boulevard/Main Street intersection.

– From 3 p.m. until approximately 7 p.m., closure of Main Street from Vaughan Harvey Boulevard to Cameron Street.

– From 4:30 p.m. until approximately 7 p.m., closure of Main Street from Cameron Street to Paul Street in Dieppe.

– From 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. closure of Downing Street from Main Street to Assomption Boulevard

The closed streets will be reopened as the parade passes.
