Thousands of people wearing poppies paid tribute to veterans and current serving members of the armed forces, cadets, and emergency services for Remembrance Day at the Moncton Coliseum.
Past President of the Dunkirk unit of the Canadian Army Veterans Gene Seaman says the veterans are buoyed up by the overwhelming support shown by residents.
“When they look around and see all these people showing up and still caring about what they did, it’s immeasurable, it makes their heart swell with pride to know the Canadian people are behind them, and still remember what they did, and the sacrifices,” says Seaman.
He says we cannot afford to forget what these people did and continue to do for us.
“They’re laying in a cold ditch watching the tracers go over their heads, wondering when one is going to strike them, it’s this complete terror, and they do it, or did it all for us,” says Seaman. “For our freedom, for everything that we have now and enjoy in this country.”
Seaman says while we remember as a country the broad strokes of the battles fought by our soldiers, we cannot afford to lose the personal stories of those who have served as they age.
