Overcoming The Stigma Of Low Literacy Skills

Almost 19 percent of New Brunswickers fall into a low literacy category according to statistics from the provincial government.

Overcoming the social stigma and feelings of embarrassment are often part of the process before getting help.

Laubach Literacy New Brunswick executive director Deanna Allen says her organization is trying to dispel myths in hopes of reaching more people.

“We have a very generous and compassionate population in New Brunswick of people who are willing to help with that and provide that one-to-one service for people who would need it,” she notes.

Allen says the one-to-one tutoring services in reading, writing and math that volunteers provide are flexible and can be customized for each individual.
