City Councillors will decide the fate tonight of a sports field and greenspace at the former Moncton High. Will they be rezoned to be turned into a parking lots to accommodate a call centre?
Moncton Centre MLA Chris Collins says there really is no other choice, ” In this particular case, it is the only alternative to make this option viable to the developer. At this point in time I think that it’s either or. If the proponent loses this field, then the project is no longer viable, and the Moncton High School development will not go ahead. If Heritage Developments isn’t given approval to add 351 parking spaces in the lot by the school and another 559 on the former football field, they could walk away from the project.”
He adds, “If they are able to go ahead, we save the building. Everyone including the people in that neighbourhood wants to see that building saved.”
A public hearing is scheduled for tonight, to discuss the rezoning. The developer has asked for the land to be rezoned from community use to mixed use.
Heritage Developments says it will need the parking to accommodate employees at a call centre.
A group of residents from Hall’s Creek, recently created a petition, opposing the rezoning. They say it would be a loss of greenspace and recreational land that is used by area residents.
They were hoping to have 1000 signatures to present to Moncton City Council tonight.
