FDA Gets Creative With Fresh Fruits And Vegetables

The addition of community gardens by the Food Depot Alimentaire has meant more fresh fruits and vegetables for their clients.

Executive Director Chantal Senecal says they did very well this summer, harvesting things like tomatoes and peppers.

She says the Food Depot has been working to find more creative ways to help make those fresh fruits and vegetables go even further, “We just harvested all of our front beds at the Peter McKee Community Centre. We have vinegar and canning salts so we’re providing that to different people who would like to do some pickling and preserves.”

Senecal says they also had volunteers come in and make spaghetti sauce to hand out to families.

For the winter, they will have to rely on donations, “We also have our food recovery program in the city, is where we recover fresh food and meat from the stores. So we’re trying to find other creative ways to provide that nutritious food,” Senecal notes.
